A long day trip with three main stops. 1. The Tibet of Abruzzo is Campo Imperatore, an area of barren mountains open to the elements and views that seem to go on forever. One part of the trip takes you to the Observatory on the top of the Gran Sasso. There are mountain gardens to see and bars and restaurants. 2. The second phase is a visit to a strong hold and castle Rocca Calascio. Open , never ending views. It seems strange to find such fascinating and well maintained examples of Abruzzo history. 3. An interesting deviation along the road, is a farmer that still makes his own mountain cheese using traditional methods.
